White Space: Techniques for Decluttering
Your Design, Mind, Space...

In this world of instant gratification and multi-tasking how can we take a step back and focus? There are messages constantly clamoring for our attention, and the more we do the more we give ourselves to do. There's one thing that cuts through all of it: white space. How can we use white space to declutter our design, minds and space?

Design.
Have you ever watched Top Chef where the judges say there were just too many flavors on the plate? Design is the same way. Between colors and typography, photos and illustrations, any design can easily become too busy. Here are some techniques to try on your next layout:

  • When you think you're done, try taking something away.
  • Experiment with leading.
  • Use generous margins and gutters.
  • Limit the amount of fonts used.

See what a difference these subtle changes can make.

Mind.
Yoga is great, but it's not the only thing you can do to clear and quiet your mind. Here are a few other ideas:

  • Meditate
  • Exercise
  • Join a group sport
  • Play an instrument
  • Volunteer
  • Play
  • Create
  • Schedule your work for the day and stick to it

Easing up on the multitasking and allowing your brain to focus on one thing at a time can pay huge dividends in terms of productivity, creativity and attention to detail.

Learn how our brain functions best.

Space.
A clean, organized space can help anyone feel more calm. Here are few ideas from the National Association of Professional Organizers to keep your office organized:

  • Keep only supplies you use on a daily basis on your desk.
  • Create a paper flow system for your incoming documents.
  • Use your inbox only for items that haven't been reviewed.
  • Create a filing system for your electronic documents that mirrors the one you have for paper. Sort, file, and purge electronic information regularly.
