There's More to Design Than Making it Look Pretty In the movies every single detail of the scene from the type of lamp on the table to the pile of crumpled up papers on the floor is there for a reason. As designers we watch movies with an unusual appreciation for this art form. We simply cannot help but notice these details and ponder the thought process that goes into every single piece in the shot. Today we're going to explore what happens "behind the scenes" of design. As always, I look forward to your thoughts! Send them over or call me at 847.844.8640.
Each design element in every piece we create exists for a particular purpose. Designers who cannot explain the reasoning behind a design element in their work have given us a glimpse into their creative process - there isn't much of one. We've always promoted the fact that we are communicators first and foremost. Arbitrarily placed graphics don't communicate well - design should communicate a message, whether it's through the written word, graphics or a bit of both. The process that goes into developing these pieces is far and away bigger than simply sitting at our computer waiting for inspiration to strike. Unlike the fine artists, as designers we are forced to create...forced to become inspired. That's why there's quite a bit behind developing a set of home page designs or ad concepts. We define the problem by wrapping our brains around the issue. We ask questions and do research. Then comes the brainstorming. We do this on our own and with each other. Just like in the movies, we throw ideas out into the open and see what sticks. Upon gathering a few ideas we focus and develop them further. Lastly, we finalize the concepts. This takes time, thought, reflection and expertise. Read more about our process here. Making it look pretty is fine and good for the kid in art school down the street, but when you understand the full power that design has, you will want professionals who can help you communicate a message - the right one.
Do you have a message that you need to communicate? Email me or call me at 847.844.8640 and we can work together to develop the method that will work best for you.
